The Tetiaroa Society, a non-profit field station, monitors green sea turtle nesting on the southern beaches, tracks the reef's coral recovery, and maintains long-term seabird counts on Motu Tahuna — the sooty tern and red-footed booby rookeries there number in the tens of thousands. Blacktip reef sharks and eagle rays circulate in the shallows off Motu Rimatu'u. A visit is, in practice, an entry into an active research landscape.
